Field Report, Day 28

We had a long day, at least based on mileage. Oh, by the way, sleeping in a buffalo robe was actually great. I slept very warm on a cold night. The day started with a dugout canoe paddle across the Clark Canyon Reservoir. The 32-foot canoe is made from a solid piece of ponderosa pine that took about 100 hours of hand labor to make. Steve put the canoe in the water the night before so it could soak up some water to help seal any pores. The canoe soaks up about 600 pounds of water, which makes it weigh about a ton.

The 83-mile ATV ride took until almost 5:30. An early night compared to many of the others we’ve had. We had two walk a rounds, the first one took us over two ridges and then down a ravine to near a cabin. The second one took only 15 minutes. Most of the ride was on ridge top, over grasslands and some sagebrush. Tomorrow we start two more days of horses.
