The Finals Days...
Opting to skip our next-to-last campground, Team South spent our last two nights prior to the joining ceremony at Mill Hollow Campground. I could feel that the end of the journey (at least physically) was drawing near – that nip in the air, the arrival of our storage boxes from Salt Lake City, our last meals together which consisted of all the “leftovers,” and wading through all the equipment, trash, and newly acquired items from the last eight weeks. It was bittersweet, but I didn’t let myself dwell on it. Instead, I busied myself with odd jobs from one end of camp to the other (much like the rest of the team). I didn’t want to ruin the last precious hours I had with the team by dwelling on how I didn’t want to leave them. Ahh, those wonderful, wonderful people that I had shared this journey with. All of our inside jokes, our good times, our difficult times, the meals, and the people we met along the way, the things we all laid eyes upon yet saw something different, something unique. I pushed it all aside and worked on cleaning out vehicles (using a kitchen broom and a piece of cardboard as a dustpan), packed and repacked my personal gear (I marveled over each and every piece of gear that was mine), signed about a million American Frontiers bandanas (in the day and into the night), and was taken back to specific days on the trip as I discovered some long-lost items of mine. Among other things, I found some nails (ask Dana Bell about this!) and the wooden spoon I carved while backpacking in the Gila National Forest. On one hand, I couldn’t wait to get home to tell family and friends of my adventures, but the “family” I was leaving behind had in some ways become just as important to me as my own flesh and blood. The wheels of time began to turn more quickly as the journey was drawing to a close, and I felt as though I were just along for the ride.
Preparations for the team joining went well. We knew that we were mighty close to the North Team. In fact, their support team was already camped at Pine Valley Campground, the location of the private joining ceremony the next day. A few of us were feeling a bit mischievous and decided we’d like to play a harmless prank on our counterparts. Nothing bad, just a little reminder that we were near and had invaded their territory. Jan and Jake (imagine that) were elected to perform the deed. Together we decided that a bandana stretched between two sticks, signed by all, would be fitting. The message was simple – “Welcome North Team! Glad you could make it!” Of course, most of us were sleeping soundly when Jan and Jake returned from the mission, but we heard all about it at breakfast the next morning. Apparently, the main area of camp was deserted and the team members were staying warm down by a campfire. Dave Mensing was possibly making dinner in the RV, because he came out beating a pan and yelling “Dinner!” As he went to get the team, Jan and Jake moved into action, actually placing the bandana inside the RV!!! Mission accomplished!
